President-elect Donald Trump has named Linda McMahon, the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), as his choice to lead the U.S. Department of Education. McMahon, a prominent businesswoman and political figure, previously served as the Administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA) under Trump from 2017 to 2019.

In a statement released Tuesday, Trump praised McMahon's leadership and experience, saying, “Linda will fight tirelessly to expand ‘Choice’ to every state in America and empower parents to make the best education decisions for their families.” He also highlighted her prior service on the Connecticut Board of Education, where she oversaw the state’s public education system, including its technical high schools.

McMahon’s appointment comes as Trump has signaled a desire to shift power away from Washington and return control of education to state governments. The President-elect's push for greater school choice and decentralized education policy reflects his broader vision to reduce federal government involvement in various sectors.

McMahon, who is married to WWE founder Vince McMahon, co-founded the entertainment giant in 1980. Her political career also includes a bid for U.S. Senate in Connecticut, though she was unsuccessful in both 2010 and 2012.

"Linda will use her decades of leadership experience and her understanding of business and education to ensure American students are better prepared for the challenges of the future," Trump’s statement continued.

The former SBA administrator's tenure from 2017 to 2019 was marked by a focus on supporting small businesses and fostering entrepreneurship. Upon her resignation in 2019, McMahon expressed pride in her accomplishments and pledged to continue supporting the Trump administration’s agenda.

As Trump prepares to take office, his administration's approach to education will likely include policies aimed at reducing the role of the Department of Education, a move Trump has previously discussed. Former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has also spoken about the potential for transforming the department, calling for a shift toward local control and a greater emphasis on school choice.

With McMahon’s appointment, the future of the nation’s education system may undergo a significant transformation, as the President-elect seeks to reshape how the federal government interacts with education at the state and local levels.
